Photographer... Anushe Low
When did you start in this business and what did you do before?
I officially started my wedding photography business in August 2010. Before this I worked as an architect – very different! I had my son in 2008 which changed everything – I wanted to spend more time with him and work flexibly. I never dreamed I could make a business out of something I had been passionate about since I was about 9 years old! I was one of those annoying guests who casually photographed friends’ weddings in the background…I enjoyed it so much and unbelievably those very photos made their way in to wedding magazines – the rest, as they say, is history!
How would you describe your style?
I love to shoot clean, editorial style wedding and portrait photos using natural light. As I come from a design background as a trained architect, I have an eye for simple lines and creative compositions
What is your favourite flower?
I’ve always loved the simplicity and beauty of an Orchid or a Calla Lily (which were both the primary flowers at my own wedding). However in recent years having been exposed to so many beautiful flowers at weddings, I must say I’ve come to love big, fat Peonies and delicately formed Ranunculus too!
What sort of information do you need to know when meeting with a prospective client for the first time?
First of all, I love to hear all about their love story! A wedding day is such an intimate, personal day for my clients, I think it’s important to get to know them a little better as I feel it helps me capture them and their day more authentically. I also like to understand their plans for the day itself, however sketchy or detailed, and walk them through it using my experience. Lots of important things come up during this discussion and my clients are usually grateful for having a better understanding of their day from start to finish
How many weddings do you handle per year and would you do more than one per weekend?
In a business where you can’t always know how your year or weekend will pan out in terms of work, I think you have to have rules: One of my rules is no more than 1 wedding per weekend – I want to be as fresh and focused as possible on a wedding day and for me, that’s physically not possible if I’m shooting more than one wedding a weekend. I also stick to photographing just 15 or 16 weddings a year which for me is plenty. I can give my clients an impeccable, dedicated service, keep turn-around times short and, most importantly, have quality time with my family
Do you have fixed prices for shooting/albums/discs or can you tailor the package for each client?
I can do both! I have a list of packages that clients can simply choose from including luxury to basic, or if they have more specific needs I can tailor a bespoke package to suit picking items from an A la carte menu
Is there anyone in the wedding industry that you particular respect or admire or have been influenced by?
Those that are in employment like I was will never truly understand just the relentless amount of hard work that a self-employed, small business owner has to do in becoming successful. Those in the industry whom I admire most are the incredible business owners - be it photographers, bloggers, cake makers, or florists who have worked non-stop, all hours and consistently for years to create amazing businesses and brands. I love this quote by Samuel Goldwyn, “The harder I work, the luckier I get”
What is the most fun part of your job?
Meeting fabulous brides and grooms and going to a proper party every weekend to celebrate love!
What is the most important part of your job?
Telling my clients’ wedding story authentically, beautifully and wholly
What makes you laugh?
My crazy daughter Sohana makes us all laugh A LOT…she’s nuts!!
